Comprehensive Waterproofing and Repair Strategy for a Subway Passage
In railway infrastructure, addressing water ingress is essential to maintain the integrity and safety of structures. This project in Warrington involved Total Specialist Maintenance (TSM) collaborating with a rail contractor to remediate issues in a newly constructed subway passage beneath a railway at a train station.
The Challenge
The client faced significant challenges with the subway passage, which was experiencing water ingress and deterioration of concrete elements shortly after construction. Immediate remediation was necessary to prevent further damage and ensure the longevity of the structure. Key concerns included:
- Preventing Further Damage: The ongoing water ingress posed risks to the structural integrity of the subway passage, necessitating prompt action to avoid costly repairs in the future.
- Ensuring Longevity: It was crucial to implement a durable solution that would protect the subway passage from future water-related issues, ensuring safety and operational efficiency for rail services.
The Solution
TSM implemented a comprehensive waterproofing and repair strategy that included several critical steps:
- Drilling: TSM accessed the back of the concrete abutment at the extrados to facilitate the waterproofing process. This step was essential for ensuring effective treatment of the affected areas.
- Injecting Waterproof Resin: A specialised waterproof injection resin was applied to the back of the structure, effectively halting water ingress and creating a durable barrier against future moisture penetration.
- Concrete Repairs: TSM conducted repairs on cracks within the abutment walls to restore structural integrity. This involved using high-quality repair materials that would withstand the unique stresses of the railway environment.
- Joint Sealing: The joints between the precast panels and the soffit of the subway were sealed to prevent water entry. This step was vital in ensuring a comprehensive waterproofing solution.
- Crack Injection: TSM performed crack injection in the precast panels to reinforce the structure. This technique not only filled voids but also provided additional strength to the panels.
- Injection Waterproofing: Waterproofing techniques were applied to the brickwork around the lift and pilaster of the subway, further enhancing the overall waterproofing system.
- Anti-Graffiti Coating: To improve the durability and aesthetics of the concrete elements, an anti-graffiti coating was applied. This protective layer helps maintain the appearance of the structure while providing an additional barrier against environmental damage.
Project Management Excellence
TSM’s project management team ensured that all aspects of the waterproofing and repair strategy were executed efficiently and effectively. By coordinating closely with the rail contractor, TSM minimised disruptions to train services and maintained clear communication throughout the project.
Quality Assurance and Safety
Safety was a top priority throughout the remediation process. TSM implemented rigorous quality assurance protocols to ensure that all work met industry standards and client specifications. The team adhered to safety guidelines to protect workers and the public during the project.
Environmental Considerations
The materials used in the waterproofing and repair processes were environmentally friendly, posing no risk to the surrounding ecosystem. TSM’s commitment to sustainable practices ensured that the project aligned with best practices for environmental safety.
