Ground Stabilisation Behind A Piled Wall
In construction, ensuring the stability of foundations is critical for the safety and longevity of structures. This project in London showcased Total Specialist Maintenance’s (TSM) expertise in ground stabilisation for a construction contractor facing significant challenges related to foundation movement.
The Challenge
The client required urgent action to consolidate and fill voids in the ground behind a piled wall. This need arose from noticeable movement of the building’s front facade, as well as a neighbouring structure. The movement was likely due to poorly constructed piles and the washing out of fines during the excavation process. Key challenges included:
- Ground Instability: The existing ground conditions posed risks to the structural integrity of both the primary building and the adjacent structure.
- Addressing Voids: It was essential to fill voids in the soil to restore the necessary bearing capacity and prevent further movement.
- Timely Intervention: The repairs needed to be executed quickly to avoid delays in the construction schedule and mitigate any further structural issues.
The Solution
To address these challenges, TSM implemented a comprehensive ground stabilisation strategy that involved several critical steps:
- Driving Injection Lances: TSM installed injection lances to a depth of 1 meter behind the piled wall. This setup covered an area of approximately 20m², strategically targeting the most affected zones for maximum effectiveness.
- Injecting Stabilisation Resin: Structural polyurethane ground stabilisation geopolymer resin was injected into the lances until refusal. This innovative resin effectively consolidated the surrounding soil, filling voids and reinstating the necessary ground bearing capacity. The chemical composition of the resin allowed it to expand and penetrate the soil, creating a strong bond that enhanced stability.
- Monitoring and Quality Assurance: Throughout the injection process, TSM closely monitored the ground conditions and the effectiveness of the resin application. Regular assessments ensured that the expected improvements in stability were achieved and that any adjustments could be made promptly.
Project Management Excellence
TSM’s project management team effectively coordinated all aspects of the ground stabilisation process, ensuring the work was completed efficiently and within the specified timeline. Their commitment to quality control and adherence to safety protocols played a significant role in the successful execution of this project. Regular communication with the contractor ensured that all stakeholders were informed and engaged throughout the process.
Environmental Considerations
TSM prioritised environmentally friendly practices throughout the project. The selected stabilisation resin was designed to minimise environmental impact, and the injection method itself was less invasive compared to traditional excavation techniques. This approach helped reduce disturbance to the surrounding area and preserved the existing landscape.
